Painted Antique English Sheraton Bowfront Chest of Drawers, England circa 1870

The classic lines of this antique English bow front chest of drawers from England circa 1870 give the piece its graceful appearance. Originally designed by Thomas Sheraton this bowfront chest exhibits two of his most identifiable design elements. The first is the lovely curve of the front of the antique chest and the second is the grand sweep of the apron between the front legs that is repeated between the front and back legs. The wonderfully low height of this English bow front chest makes it ideally suited for use beside a sofa or bed. The chest has been refreshed with an intriguing painted design reminiscent of those first seen during the Regency period (1810-1830) incorporating the exotic element of bamboo.  Notice how the gentle soothing grey background colour is enlivened with the delicate hand painted quality of the bamboo that follows the outline of each drawer front as well as the top and sides. The front of the top edge features a grooved horizontal moulding that accentuates the bow front and straight sides. All four of the drawers retain their original wood knobs making each drawer easy to slide open and shut. This wonderful antique English chest of drawers with its painted finish is a great example of modern transformation of antique pieces for life in the twenty first century. We have another chest similar in style, color and dimensions to use as a pair with this chest, please see MJ15B.
