Pair Antique Chinese Foo Guardian Lions China circa 1875 on Custom Lucite Stands

The marvelous sculptural impact of these antique Chinese Foo Lions from China circa 1875 has been enhanced by the addition of custom Lucite mounts which display the lions at an angle to fully showcase their appeal. Please notice that each lion is hand carved and have a slight difference in scale and detail. These antique Chinese Foo Lions are unusual in that their bodies are set sideways with the faces turned forward. The chin beards show the direction of the blowing wind and each jaw is open in a ferocious roar. These lions were always meant to be seen from the front as the backs are relatively simple and most likely were part of a larger ensemble, perhaps an altar or architectural assemblage. The substantial scale of the custom Lucite bases complements each antique Chinese Foo Lion and enables them to be displayed in the round. The rich colouration of the elm timber combined with the marvelous detail of the carving gives these Kuang Hsu period Chinese Foo Lions an immediate artistic appeal.
