Pair Antique French Iron Bound Wagon Wheels France circa 1880

This pair of enormous antique French wagon wheels from France circa 1880 are wonderful artifacts from a bygone era. Please notice the construction was done by hand as the round wheels are made of separate sections of timber joined and smoothed to make a continuous circle. The individual spokes had to be placed by hand to connect the inner section that enclosed the axle to the outer wheel before the large outer iron band could be made and attatched to ensure a tight fit. Please be sure to enlarge and zoom on the photographs to see the signs of age and the passage of time as these wheels were used for many years. Before the invention of cars and trucks all transportation of rural goods was made by wagon especially those home and farm grown items sold locally at a market or fair. Because of the great scale of these wheels they were obviously used on a large wagon capable of carrying a large load. Whether used as a display object or transformed into a chandelier or pair of chandeliers these excellent nineteenth century objects continue to fascinate and resonate as works from our shared history.
