Pair Antique Italian Baroque Painted Mirror Sconces Italy circa 1840

This pair of antique Italian Baroque style painted sconces from Italy circa 1840 have been wired for American electricity through the single candle arm to reflect in the original mirror glass. The luscious colour of the painted finish features the warms umbers and siennas instantly recognizable from their use in both the interiors and exteriors of Italian villas and furnishings for hundreds of years. Notice how the shield shaped frames are wider at the top than at the base with the individually carved framing devices are set away from the frame allowing light to flow through the frame to the wall behind the sconces. Both open scrolls and flourishes distinguish the carving (no straight lines to be seen anywhere!) with the characteristic signs of hand work visible on both sconces. Often times sconces like this appear as painted antique French sconces especially around the border shared by France and Italy but the shape of these sconces and the choice of colour are distinctively Italian. The grand scale of these baroque Italian sconces is quite desirable as they will command attention in an interior and may be used in a variety of settings.
