Pair French Art Deco Walnut Maple Birch Armchairs circa 1930

A pair of striking French Art Deco walnut armchairs from France circa 1930. The architectural aspects of the French Art Deco period are on full display here in this pair of Art Deco chairs with their geometric profile. The designer obviously planned for these chiars to be seen from all four sides in an interior as the appearance from any direction is quite arresting. Please enlarge the photographs to see the use of contrasting timber including walnut, maple and birch to subtly highlight the large flat planes of the chair sides and back. Interstingly this form of Cubist influenced chair appears in the designs of Jean-Michel Frank, Jacques-Emile Ruhlmann and Jacques Adnet but the use of fabulous timber even on the reverse side of these chairs is what gives them their distinctive flair. Superbly comfortable upholstery and a slight rake to the back ensures a relaxing fit while seated. The arm height is 23" from the floor and the seat is 17 1/2" high.
