Pair of Antique Austrian Biedermeier Period Birchwood Chairs circa 1830

A pair of antique Austrian Biedermeier period birchwood side chairs from Austria circa 1830 with striking upholstery. The wonderfully clean and contemporary lines of these chairs are quite remarkable when viewed from a modern perspective. The back of each chair is supported by a single vertical sweep of timber that begins at the top and sweeps down in a delightful curve to the floor. This slight curve is echoed by the front legs and gives the chairs a sculptural aspect from whatever angle they are viewed. The chairs are joined at the top by a horizontal piece that follows the same profile at the vertical supports and is slightly inset within to create a subtle and attractive change in the profile. Within the open space above the seat of each chair and the lower edge of the top joinery is a pair of arced shapes that meet in the centre where they are each embellished with a diamond shaped lozenge coloured in black lacquer to resemble ebony. This lozenge is horizontal in its shape while the same diamond lozenge is applied to the front legs just beneath the seats but turned in a vertical direction. The contrast between the warmth of the golden birch wood and the starkness of the black diamond creates a suitable striking effect from a minimal amount of material. Below the two arcs is a simple horizontal stretcher that also joins the two vertical sides. Even this utilitarian structural element has been made to perform a decorative function and adds to the visual appeal of the chairs. The chairs have been freshly upholstered in a distinctively patterned fabric whose modernist aesthetic perfectly suits their appearance. Because the seats of the chairs are wide and deep they are comfortable to be seated in while enjoying a drink and conversation. As the chairs are finished on all four sides they may also be placed anywhere within a room and be beautiful to behold.
