Pair of Antique French Louis XIV Style Pewter Candlesticks, Now Wired as Lamps

A pair of antique French pewter candlestick lamps from France circa 1870 that have been converted into lamps. Please notice the elaborate design of these candlesticks. The base of each has a lovely circular shape with a scalloped edge and a bell shaped socle that ascends to support the shaft. Each shaft also has a decorative form as these candlesticks were modeled after original examples in silver. The candlesticks even have a large bobeche at the top designed to catch the dripping wax from burning candles. The pewter craftsmen were very aware of what was considered popular in silver as designs were circulated through engravings and could be seen in contemporary paintings of the times that depicted domestic interiors. Pewter was a commonly used material for eating utensils, plates, bowls, pitchers, tureens and platters but was less often used for lighting so it is unusual to have a pair of candlesticks. The beauty and decorativeness indicate they were used in a relatively prosperous household.
