Pair of Grand Italian Sconces, Original Painted Finish circa 1820

A pair of sconces having a grand scale from Italy circa 1820 each retaining the original painted finish on wood simulating marble along with a carved flourish at the base which is gilded. The painted vertical elements are highlighted by a pair of horizontal gilded bands wrapping from side to side. The carved flourish at the base terminates in a finial that resembles a pineapple or an artichoke. These brackets were originally used to support a massive wooden beam placed across the room. The faux marble finish is a fine example of the lavish painted decoration found in prosperous Italian houses. In order to enhance the appeal of these Italian artifacts they have been custom wired as sconces for American electricity and fitted with custom woven linen shades. Please notice the geometric shape of the rectangular shades in contrast with the slanted panels of the antique painted timber. Because of the grand scale of these sconces they are easily used as the focal point of an interior wall.
