Pair of Antique English Oak Bow Back Windsor Chairs circa 1875

A pair of antique English oak Windsor chairs from England circa 1870 very often found in rural England at a pub and commonly referred to as smokers bow chairs. In many novels and paintings depicting life in 19th century England, after a long day of outdoor work the custom of having a pipe by the fire was a cherished ritual. always made with a curved back and low height, the chairs were designed to be extremely comfortable seating for long periods of time. The legs were always turned and joined by a stretcher to provide strength. The upright supports connecting the seat and arms are also turned and set at an angle to accommodate a variety of sizes. These chairs are classics of English furniture and with their sculptural form often will enhance a contemporary interior.
