Pair Terra Cotta Wall Decoration circa 1825

This pair of large antique hand cast German terra cotta plaques circa 1825 were most likely designed by the architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel. He was the integral mover behind the redesign of Berlin in the early nineteenth century with a vision for the entire city not just individual buildings. Terra cotta was a favorite decorative element in his structures. The design is deeply modeled with a rare depth using the concept of light and dark created by shadows to enhance the sculptural quality. Please enlarge the photographs to see these details in closeup especially the photograph of the reverse side with my hand showing the actual scale. Because these are solid terra cotta they are relatively heavy and they show signs of the passage of time. We have two pair on offer and each one of the four have weathered in a slightly different way.
