Pair Vintage French Empire Chapuis Ebonized Gilt Chairs circa 1950

Pair of vintage French Empire ebonized black lacquer gilt wood chairs circa 1950 after Chapuis. These black lacquered chairs have the original hand applied gilt stenciling and decoration reflecting the early nineteenth century facination with the ancient Classical civilizations of Greece and Rome. The form of this chair is based on the "sulla curulis" (Latin for folding stool) prevalent in wealthy households. The dramatic sweep of the legs and arms and curved backrest was revolutionary in the early nineteenth century in furniture design and became associated with the Imperial reign of Emperor Napoleon I of France. Please enlarge the photographs to see the details on these exceptional chairs. Jean-Joseph Chapuis of Brussels was the designer of this particular chair model. There are two sets of cushions included with this pair of french Empire chairs as seen in the photographs.
