Pair Antique French Walnut Carved Panels of Dolphins circa 1890

A pair of handsome Louis XIV style walnut panels from France circa 1890 each featuring a carved design of a shell supported by five brackets. Resting on the shelf is the famous Italian dolphin fish with an upturned tail that first made its appearance during the Renaissance as a favoured decorative motif. Behind each fish is a tall slender vase from which cascades an abundance of fruit and foliage signifying the bounty of Nature. Flanking each of the shelves are stylized reeds and fronds. These pieces were always a pair as evidenced by the fact that they face each other when they are hanging. They are beautifully decorative and the walnut is a warm rich colour.
