Régence Style Antique French Five Panel Walnut Needlepoint Screen ("paravent"), circa 1875

A Régence style antique French five-panel carved walnut framed needlepoint screen circa 1875. Please note that each panel of needlepoint depicts medieval knights and ladies enclosed by a walnut frame surmounted by a well carved coat of arms. This screen is known as a "paravent" in French which translates as "against the wind". Originally this was freestanding and placed adjacent to the door of an interior warmed by a blazing fire where it protected the inhabitants from gusts of cold and blustery wind when the door was opened. As the five sections are hinged it was easy to fold it up and store it during warmer months. Now, because of its scale and elaborate hand work it will be stunning when installed as a wall hanging either by itself or above a buffet or console table where its unique style may be admired.
