French Régence Style Painted Bench Cabriole Legs with Stretchers France

A French Régence style carved and painted bench from France with an upholstered seat. This attractive bench features the beautiful cabriole legs joined by stretchers that appeared during the early eighteenth century when Louis XV was too young to assume the throne of France and his mother and uncle ruled in his stead as Regents of France. The details to notice here on this bench include the four legs at the corners face outward at a forty-five degree angle while the inner two legs on each side face out at a straight angle as well as the interlocking pattern of the stretchers with open areas between the curved sections. While each of the legs end in a design taken from a seashell known as a "coquille" foot the top section of each leg has a similar but different carving depending on whether it is a corner leg or an inner leg. All eight of the legs are connected by an apron that supports the upholstered seat and between each of the legs is a beautiful carved design of a stylized scallop shell flanked by flourishes. The apron, legs and stretchers are further enhanced with the addition of a grooved channel that follows the profile and this deeply incised line captures the light and emphasizes the change in the surface quite effectively. The fully upholstered seat is a separate cushion that rests within the frame so it is easy to recover with a different fabric if desired. We have chosen a nubby textured cotton woven in a checked design. This is a delightful bench and will be at home in an entry, hallway or at the foot of a bed to provide comfortable and attractive seating.
