Tall Venetian Style Painted Iron Candle Stand Italy circa 1920

A tall Venetian style painted iron candle stand floor lamp, Italy circa 1920. Please notice the remarkably life like representation of the floral vine that is wrapped around the central vertical shaft with its slightly twisted form. The entire piece stands upon a triple legged base of bold scrollwork adorned with large acanthus leaves. The shaft is entwined with a stem that features a variety of leaves and flower blossoms in an assortment of sizes. This variety mimics the true growth of flowers as they bloom over a period of time. The extremely naturalistic effect created by the sculptor of this piece is quite enchanting. The traces of the original painted finish add to this lovely illusion. The candlestand shaft is crowned with a lantern in the shape of an inverted hexagon with each of the six panels outlined in braided wire. The top edge features six scrolled iron supports that keep aloft an iron sphere. Inside this open area it is possible to see that this lantern was electrified at one time. So this wonderfully evocative example of Italian craftsmanship may either be used with a large pillar candle or wired again for use as an electrified floor lamp. Please enlarge the photographs to see these details in closeup.
