Two Antique French Cast Iron Dumbbells circa 1890

Who knew the French cared about muscles? Our modern weight lifting culture began years ago as this pair of antique French cast iron dumb bells circa 1890 demonstrates. Each cast as a single piece of iron these dumb bells have an appealing oxidized surface testament to their age and use both inside and out. We find them sculpturally appealing for a table scape for their rounded lines and unusual background. The name comes from the rounded end originally used to ring a bell but without the bell the weight is essentially mute hence the addition of "dumb".
