(On Hold) Pair of Vintage French Art Deco Woven Textiles France circa 1930 Evoking the American Southwest
A pair of sensational vintage French Art Deco woven textiles period circa 1930 each on a custom mount evoking the American Southwest. These stunning panels of fabric use the potent colours of the French and American national flags in a totally unique design. Please notice how the zig zag pattern that frames the central panel is reminiscent of the Native American Indian patterns seen on woven baskets that are a central aspect of indigenous Indian culture. The powerful bands of deep navy blue at the top and bottom are separated by narrow stripes of red and white and serve to frame the vibrant central panel with its brilliant red colour. The medallion in this central panel is composed of strict geometric designs placed together to create an entire motif defined by colour, shape and variation in scale. These panels were created as artifacts in and of themselves and were never meant for upholstery. The art of textiles has a long history with the famous tapestries of Belgium and France being the most famous because of their long years of production and association with nobility. What is not as well known is the creativity and design consciousness exhibited in the twentieth century, especially in France and Scandinavia, in the experimentation and weaving of unique and individual designs that were entirely of the moment in association with the design revolution in furniture and architecture. These textiles carry great dramatic power and may easily stand alone as pieces of design in a contemporary interior as they will be an excellent focal point. Each textile has been custom mounted on a wooden stretcher to keep the fabric tight and emphasizes the graphic power of the design. While we are offering the pair they are also offered individually as well at $4,931 each.
