Vintage French Modernist Hand Forged Fireplace Andirons France circa 1940

The unusual leaf motif across the front of these vintage French fireplace andirons from France circa 1940 distinguishes these essential fireplace accessories. The strictly symmetrical lines of the actual andiron begin with the straight vertical centre support capped with a four sided raised diamond. At the base of the spire is a double arch that extends to the left and right and elevates each andiron. Both andirons also feature a large iron ring with a ribbon profile that freely lift and swing back and forth across the front. The gently curved leaves that form the decorative framing to these andirons are three dimensional with a curved sweep that also are reminiscent of flames. The purpose of andirons is to elevate the logs so air may freely circulate to keep the logs blazing as well as to make it easier when sweeping out the ashes.
