Vintage French Verre Églomisè Mirror, Celestial Motifs, France circa 1940 (76"w x 29"h)

This vintage French verre églomisè mirror from France circa 1940 is quite unusual. The wide horizontal shape (over six feet!) is emphasized with the scale of the ebonized black frame that surrounds the entire mirror. Please be sure to enlarge and zoom on the photographs to see the enchanting detail on this hand painted mirror. "Verre églomisè" is the French term used for mirror that has been gilded and painted on the reverse side so the decoration remains intact no matter how many times the front of the mirror is touched and cleaned. The subject matter in this mirror relates to Surrealism art with its series of motifs placed together without telling a narrative. Please be sure to enlarge and zoom on the photographs to see the details assembled by the artist Lasco (signed lower right). The benevolent figure of the sun, tendrils of climbing vines, faraway views of expanding galaxies as well as geometric patterns incorporating eight repeated figures all coexist within the mirror in a midnight black background. The random application of gold leaf appears throughout the mirror in orgnic shapes that complement the overall theme. This is actually a work of art even though the technique is traditionally associated with reflective mirror glass. It is possible to see one's reflection but its purpose is truly to enchant the eye and mind to enter the world created by Lasco.
