Antique French White Glazed Ceramic Mortar Bowl France circa 1890
An antique French white glazed ceramic mortar bowl with the maker's mark from France circa 1890. This bowl was used in a pharmacy for compounding various prescriptive remedies for the relief and cure of ailments. The circular body is wider at the top and tapers down to a weighted and substantial base. Also there is a small pointed spout so the mixture contained within the vessel could easily be poured into a separate container, most usually a bottle with a stopper. The smooth surface accepted a variety of ingredients that could be mixed with a pestle and thoroughly blended to make a smooth compound. Now this vessel is an elegant piece on its own but could be used to hold various implements in a kitchen or as a lovely cachepot to conceal the container of a potted plant.
