Antique French Napoleon III Ebonized and Gilded Mirror France circa 1875 (37"w x 63"h)
The sheer design exuberance in this antique French gilded and ebonized mirror from France circa 1875 perfectly embodies the spirit of life when Napoleon III reigned in France. It was a time of peace and prosperity that gave permission for an extravagance of decoration. This mirror incorporates a combination of elements chosen to dazzle and enchant. There are actually six separate pieces of original mirror glass included here. The main mirror is surrounded on all four sides by slender panels of mirror etched on the reverse side with a foliate pattern. The cartouche at the top of the mirror features an oval mirror glass etched with a floral pattern that appears to float within the fluttering ribbons that surround it. The oval mirror is flanked by the traditional symbol of the French Royal House, acorns and oak leaves along with scrolled flourishes that are repeated at the lower corners. To highlight the mirror glass the frame has been ebonized in deepest black pigment while the incised details are gilded. The reflective quality of the various elements offer a consistent delight to the eye as it travels across the entire expanse of this mirror. As the glasses are original they feature the customary speckles, dots and foxing indicative of antique mirror.
