Octagonal table inlaid with mother of pearl from Damascus, Syria c.1885. The elaborate pattern of the mother of pearl ( a natural material made from abalone shell that is polished to a high sheen) reflects the tradition of beautifully patterned rugs woven in the area for centuries. The top of the table has a raised edge and as these tables were used for serving tea the raised rim kept the tea cups from sliding off the top. Please enlarge the additional photographs to see the wonderful interplay of the dark wood against the sheen of the abalone shell and how it captures and reflects light. The table may be used anywhere in an interior because it is finished on all sides and will add an exotic touch to a room. The eight pointed star on the top of the table is particularly striking.
